Olympian Cindy Ishoy Comes to Wisconsin

SW Chapter Hosting 2-day clinics: July 7-8 and August 4-5

Article excerpt from May 2018 eQuester Newsletter, written by Caryn Vesperman

Canadian Cindy Ishoy rode her horse, Dynasty, at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, placing fourth as an individual and, with her fellow riders, earned a Team Bronze medal. Ishoy said this was her most memorable show because “it was an accumulation of years of work that all came together at the right time.”

She began training as a swimmer, but switched to horses in her teenage years. She started riding in Germany while her father was stationed there. She was thirteen at that time, and there was a riding club close to the base. “I asked my father if I could have lessons,” says Ishoy, “and that was the beginning of the end.”

She first represented Canada on the international stage at the 1971 Pan American Games where she won a gold medal in the team dressage event and placed fourth individually. She then attended her first edition of the Olympic Games the following year, where she finished 26th in the individual dressage and sixth among 10 nations in the team event. She was selected for the 1976 Olympics, but did not compete, and was then slated to attend the Games in 1980, until Canada boycotted them.
